The U.S. Army General Michael “Erik” Kurilla, head of the U.S. Central Command, is reportedly under investigation after allegedly shoving a subordinate during a recent trip to the Middle East, according to three officials familiar with the matter who spoke to NBC News.

The incident is said to have occurred on a C-17 aircraft several weeks ago, where Kurilla allegedly pushed an airman who had instructed him to remain seated and buckled up amid communication and logistical issues. Witnesses described Kurilla as visibly frustrated, with tensions mounting onboard the aircraft.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), which operates independently within the military's law enforcement agencies, confirmed that it had launched an investigation into the matter but refrained from providing further details.

Despite the investigation, a senior administration official confirmed that Kurilla continues to fulfill his duties and remains on assignment in the Middle East. General Kurilla’s tenure as head of the U.S. Central Command is scheduled to conclude on April 11, 2025. Kurilla was appointed to the position in 2022, tasked with overseeing U.S. military operations in key conflict zones, including Afghanistan and Iraq. Since the beginning of renewed hostilities in Gaza in October 2023, Kurilla has made frequent trips to the region, most recently on October 5, 2024, following escalations involving Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.

The investigation into Kurilla’s actions adds another layer of complexity to his responsibilities in the region, where his presence is intended to demonstrate continuous U.S. support for Israeli security amid rising regional tensions.
