Dr. Hussam Abu Safia Critically Injured in Israeli Attack on Gaza Hospital Amid Ongoing Siege

Abu Safia’s Condition Worsens After Israeli Quadcopter Attack on Gaza Hospital

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, is in critical condition after being wounded by an Israeli quadcopter attack targeting the medical facility, Al Jazeera reported on November 24. The attack, which left him injured by shrapnel while checking on patients, marks yet another blow to one of the last semi-functional hospitals in northern Gaza.

In a video circulating on social media, Abu Safia is seen addressing the world from his hospital bed:

“I was injured while at my place of work [at the hospital] … this is an honor for me. My blood is not more valuable than the blood of others … We will continue to provide humanitarian care no matter what; we are steadfast before the world, which is unjust and has violated our rights.”

The hospital director, who has remained at Kamal Adwan Hospital throughout the ongoing conflict, has repeatedly spoken about the deliberate targeting of medical facilities by Israeli forces. He previously revealed that the hospital has been struck more than eight times in recent weeks.

The latest attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital came on Sunday, following the quadcopter strike. It compounded the devastation caused by a bombardment on November 21, which injured six medical staff and critically damaged vital infrastructure, including the hospital's main generator and water tanks.

The situation in northern Gaza continues to deteriorate under Israel’s siege. Over 100,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced, and critical health facilities have been repeatedly targeted. Abu Safia’s personal losses underscore the brutality of the campaign. In October, his eight-year-old son was killed after the director refused to comply with Israeli evacuation orders.

Israel’s relentless assault on northern Gaza hospitals forms part of a broader strategy that has seen over 50 days of bombardment, displacement, and violence aimed at either expelling or killing the remaining population. On Friday, an Israeli quadcopter also targeted Al-Awda Hospital, intensifying the crisis for Gaza's besieged healthcare system.

Abu Safia’s resolve, despite his injuries and personal tragedy, reflects the dire situation faced by Gaza’s medical community and the unwavering commitment to provide care in the face of immense adversity.
